In accordance with Italian Legislative Decree 81/2008, all students participating in clinical clerkships are required to comply with occupational health and safety regulations. This includes undergoing health surveillance examination and completing mandatory training modules.
HEALTH SURVEILLANCE EXAMINATION
Health surveillance examination is scheduled starting from the beginning of 3rd Year of Medicine and Surgery Degree Programme. Students must undergo health check-up at the Occupational Medicine Unit, located at the Building H of Polyclinic Hospital University.
The check-up include medical examination and blood testing.
Blood test includes complete blood count and basic metabolic panel, and serologic testing for immunity to bloodborne transmissible diseases (hepatitis B surface antibody [HBsAb], hepatitis C antibody)
The physician appointed for health surveillance examination of medical students (contact available at the webpage https://medicine-and-surgery.cdl.unime.it/en/contacts) will evaluate the test results and the student’s immunisation status in order to issue the eligibility certificate, which is mandatory to access clinical clerkships and internships as required by Legislative Decree 81/2008.
The time schedule of health surveillance examination is made available by the physician appointed for health surveillance examination to the Course Didactic secretary, that will equally distribute the 3rd year students among all available dates and will make available the lists to the 3rd year student representatives for sharing with their classmates.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING COURSE
The access to curricular training activities is allowed only after having attended the mandatory course on workplace safety. This is because while attending clinical clerkships, students are considered workers under Italian occupational health and safety regulations (Italian Legislative Decree 81/2008), due to their exposure to specific risks.
Mandatory health and safety training course includes four modules:
· General Training: Module 1
· Specific Training - Low Risk: Module 2
· Specific Training - Medium Risk: Module 2 + Module 3
· Specific Training - High Risk: Module 2 + Module 3 + Module 4
· Module 1

This certificate, valid pursuant to Legislative Decree 81/2008 and valid for five years, is a prerequisite for participation in clerkships and internships.
